“Design’s dead, dude. It’s all about functionality.”
The convergence of digital, print, motion and interactive techniques into creative new media vehicles. These vehicles will be able to interact with the end user at any point of their day on their mobile devices, at home or work and everywhere in between. All along the way, the end message, wrapped in what we call “graphic design,” will be targeted to the end user’s needs and desires.
What happens to the sensual experience? Will people still want the sensory experience that print graphic design provides?
The traditional print experience will not go away but it will be much more limited as younger generations begin to adopt the tablet—or even e-paper in the more distant future. People will always want that sensory experience but as mobile digital formats become closer and closer to physical “paper,” we will see fewer traditional paper and more digital touch experiences that can deepen the sensual experience by adding interactivity into the mix.
Does print design create a more intimate experience than digital design?
I might be biased being an interactive designer but I’m not convinced that print design creates a more intimate experience than digital design.
A print magazine would seem to be a more intimate experience based on just the nature of holding the material. However, with technology like the tablet, we get that hand-held experience with the engrossing nature of a rich interactive experience. There is definitely value in the physical nature of print design but I think interactivity mixed with physical touch is much more valuable. If not for the older generations today, it will be the standard for young generations that are growing up with these devices.
What new skills do today’s graphic designers need?
Modern day graphic designers can’t just divide themselves into print/digital/motion designers. While one could have a specialty in any of these areas, new technology creates a rich mix of all of these disciplines. The designers of tomorrow will have not only a good overall understanding of design but will also know how to apply that to a mix of media types to create the most compelling experience for the end user.
