5 Must-Have Skills for Tomorrow’s Journalist

December 13, 2010

From Lori Blachford, Fisher-Stelter chair of magazine journalism at Drake University

What are the top 5 skills or experiences you want all students to graduate with?

1. Online savvy is key, and by that I mean understanding website delivery of information, how information is found online and how you need to deliver it online.

2. The other one is great grammar. That sounds very old school but these students are not going to be supervised in a lot of ways that we were supervised when we were coming up through the ranks. Copy editors are few and far between, and the good ones are even more rare. Students have to be able to come out and do good, responsible work and that starts with being able to write correctly.

3. The other old school one is strong ethical values and understanding of ethical activity. Because, again, they are

not going to be so fully supervised, and they’ve got to make good decisions for themselves and for their companies.

4. The next one is social media. It is huge and growing. They all have a Facebook account and a Twitter account, but very few of them understand how to really leverage those outlets into self promotion as well as getting word out about new articles, new products your company is offering, any of that.

5. The other one would be office job skills. A lot of students feel like they can work at a home office and maybe never see anyone. They need to understand how to get along, understand how to work with other egos, how to work in collaboration. Face-to-face collaboration is a dying skill. We have fewer and fewer opportunities to work face to face with one another, or to work in teams. Everything seems to be so segmented and separated. So I think that the ability to set goals and then work towards those goals as a team is essential.
